How to use this generator

  1. Leave Category random or choose the kind of selection you want.
  2. Open Advanced options to combine culture, period, length, first letter and U.S. rank.
  3. Generate a name and read its source note. Clear a filter if no documented name matches.

Examples

  • Italian + Renaissance: Giovanni is included in the Florence 1427 collection.
  • Spanish + Medieval: Petro is one of the spellings in the Sahagún selection.

Building a character or baby-name shortlist

Start with culture and period for a historical character; use length or first letter for a baby-name shortlist. The source note identifies the particular evidence used. A result does not establish a name’s meaning, pronunciation or legal eligibility for registration.

What the filters describe

Culture means documented usage, not necessarily linguistic origin. Classic means a spelling appears in both included U.S. lists for the 1880s and 1920s; Timeless also requires the 2020–2025 list. Vintage and Historical include the older collections. U.S. rank applies only to the selected source period, not worldwide popularity. Matching spellings cycle before reuse; narrow filters reduce the pool.

Common questions

Will switching language change the name?

The selected spelling and matching source note can be carried to the other language. Names are not translated into invented equivalents.

Why does a filter combination return nothing?

Every filter must match the bundled evidence. International records do not have U.S. ranks, and not every culture has records for every period. Use Clear filters to broaden the selection.
