How to use this generator
- Choose a continent or explore all included places.
- Use Advanced options to focus on a country; it must also match the continent.
- Generate a city, open its GeoNames reference and research whether a real trip would suit you.
Examples
- Japan + Asia narrows the draw to included Japanese cities.
- Clear the country filter to explore different countries within a continent.
How the city selection was made
The collection uses up to 15 large populated-place records per country from the GeoNames cities15000 extract, selecting by source population and removing duplicate city names within a country. It covers 2,346 places in 186 countries. Groups follow the country’s GeoNames assignment, so every selected city in a transcontinental country uses that country group rather than a separate city-continent judgement. The draw rotates countries where possible, so countries with more included cities do not dominate every first round.
From discovery to planning
These are geographic discovery results, not tourist ratings, current safety assessments or promises of affordability and access. Check official entry requirements, current conditions, accessibility and your own priorities before booking. Some small countries have no city meeting this collection’s threshold; a mismatched continent-and-country filter has no results.
How a round avoids repeats
Each matching record is used once before that pool starts another round. Changing a filter keeps the visit’s seen-record history; restrictive filters have fewer real matches and will finish sooner. Reloading or opening another page starts a fresh session.
Common questions
Does it only pick capitals?
No. It includes other populated places as well. Use Capital City for the separate country–capital collection.
Why can my country filter run out quickly?
Each country has at most 15 selected places. Broaden to a continent or all countries for a much longer session.
