Species and genus records are different

The collection includes 416 species-level and 468 genus-level entries from NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide table. A genus entry is not counted as a named species. Records with uncertainty qualifiers or informal morphospecies labels were excluded from this selection. Weird is a discovery theme, not a scientific classification.

What the observation tells you

Each taxon has one example observation at 200 metres or deeper. Its depth and locality are not the complete depth or geographic range of that animal. Basin filters apply to the selected example, which can omit other occurrences of the same taxon. The collection covers the North Atlantic, North Pacific and South Pacific; it is not a global species inventory.

No-repeat rounds with real limits

Each matching record is used before that selection starts another round. Subject rotation also spreads related plants or animals where the pool allows. Filters retain seen-record history during the visit, but narrow selections finish sooner. Reloading or opening another page starts a fresh session.

Common questions

Do photographs or variants count as extra animals?

No. The selection is deduplicated by scientific identification, with one example observation per entry. No source images are reproduced.

Why are some filters small?

Some groups have few qualifying source identifications. Broaden the group or basin to explore more real entries.
