How to use this generator
- Choose a fossil group or explore the full collection.
- Generate a scientific name and read the recorded age envelope.
- Open the PBDB record for source details, copy the result or generate again.
Examples
- Spheruprismatoolithus condensus
- Yinlong downsi
Which extinct animals are included?
This initial collection has 200 entries in each of six groups: non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, trilobites, ammonoids and fossil mammals. Entries are accepted species names in the selected PBDB queries, marked extinct and supported by recorded occurrences. Trace-fossil names and entries without usable age bounds were excluded. It is a selected fossil collection, not every extinct animal or a modern-extinction catalogue.
Age bounds are not extinction dates
The numeric bounds describe the fossil-occurrence age envelope recorded in the database. They do not prove the first moment the species evolved or the exact date the last individual died. Geological interval names retain the source spelling and can reflect the resolution of the source evidence.
No-repeat rounds with real limits
Each matching record is used before that selection starts another round. Subject rotation also spreads related plants or animals where the pool allows. Filters retain seen-record history during the visit, but narrow selections finish sooner. Reloading or opening another page starts a fresh session.
Common questions
Are unfamiliar names invented?
No. Names come from the selected PBDB taxonomic records. Common names are not fabricated when no verified one is included.
Can the classification change?
Yes. New evidence can revise fossil names, relationships and age interpretations. Follow the source record for context.
